Sharmilee Nyenhuis, MD, FAAAAI

Sharmilee Nyenhuis, MD, completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) and Allergy/Immunology training at the University of Wisconsin. In 2009, she returned to UIC where she served as the Director of the Allergy/Asthma/Immunology Program for 12 years and was Section Chief of Allergy at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. She joined the Section of Allergy/Immunology at the University of Chicago in 2022. She is an active member and leader in multiple professional societies including American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, American Thoracic Society and Chicago Asthma Consortium. She was recently appointed as the inaugural vice chair of health outcomes, advocacy and community health for the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago.

Her research portfolio aims to test and implement interventions that address diet, weight loss and physical activity in minoritized asthma populations, examine the impact of climate change in asthma and examine the association of real-time indoor and outdoor air quality and asthma outcomes. Her overall goals are to expand the knowledge of lifestyle behavior change in asthma, to improve the lives of minoritized populations with asthma, and to refine best practices for implementation of lifestyle interventions.
